In this blog, we’re exploring a few easy ways to connect with the energy of the moon in her most auspicious phase. The rituals we go over are geared toward those at the very beginning of their magical practice, but can also serve as a helpful base to build your own lunar rituals at any point in your witchy career.

Make Full Moon Water

Making moon water is likely a bit of magic you’ve heard of before. It’s such a simple process that many folks might gloss over it, but its simplicity does not diminish its power.
The Concept: Placing a vessel of water in the moonlight will charge it with the power of the full moon.
Materials Needed:
- A vessel of choice (e.g. a special chalice or clear glass jar)
- Water (from the tap or from a nearby stream)
- Optional: Full Moon incense or candle
- Optional: Crystals (e.g. moonstone, clear quartz, amethyst, rose quartz, labradorite, blue lace agate, lapis lazuli)
- Optional: Paper and pen or tape
The Process:
- Fill a vessel with water.
- Place the vessel outside or on a windowsill to charge. Leave overnight or for a few hours while the moon is in the sky.
- Optional: Light your Full Moon incense or candle near your vessel of water to imbue the working with plant magic crafted for this particular lunar phase.
- Make it your own: Use crystals and/or sigils to charge your moon water with a specific intention. Place a crystal atop the container, draw a sigil to tape to or place beneath the container, and/or arrange crystals around the container to magnify the lunar energy.
- Store your moon water on your altar or in the fridge. Use for magical workings, pour into a bath, or brew into a tea (make sure the water is safe to drink). Adorn its container with crystals and/or sigils to maintain potency if not used within the next lunar cycle.
Bay Leaf Wish Ritual
This lunar phase sees the moon at the height of its power. As such, a full moon can be a potent time both for releasing or banishing something you no longer desire as well as for manifesting something you’d like to bring into your life.
The Concept: Writing down a wish or intention on a bay leaf and burning it sends the energy directly into the universe.
Materials Needed:
- Bay leaves
- A pen or sharpie
- A lighter
- Optional: Heat-safe tongs
- Optional: Heat-safe dish, sand, and a charcoal disc
The Process:
- Consider what you would like to banish or manifest during this full moon.
- Write this intention on a bay leaf. You can represent the wish using words, sigils, or any other symbols of personal meaning. Focus on the energy of the intention as you scribe it onto the leaf.
- Light the leaf aflame and watch it burn. Make sure to do this step outside! If available, use a pair of metal tongs to hold the leaf as you light it. If using a charcoal incense burner, simply place the leaf atop the charcoal disc once it is lit.
- Release the wish from your mind now that the working is done.
Moon Meditation

This is a simple attunement exercise that can be especially useful for witches just starting out to get familiar not just with the natural energies we can work with, but also with the process of holding your own focus throughout a magical working.
The Concept: Use the power of your mind to connect with the power and presence of the moon with an easy visualization technique.
Materials Needed:
- A comfortable place to sit or lie down
- Your own mind!
- Optional: Full Moon incense or candle to set the mood
The Process:
- Optional: Light a stick of Full Moon incense or light your Full Moon candle to welcome the energy of the moon into your space. You might like to cleanse yourself and/or your room before settling in for the meditation.
- Make yourself comfortable, whether you’re outside beneath the moon or lying in bed before sleep. (NOTE: For safety, do not leave a candle or incense burning as you sleep.)
- Imagine the full moon hovering just above your body, its pearly light shining over you.
- Start to visualize this moonlight pouring into your body, starting down at your feet and slowly rising up to the top of your head. As the light fills each part of your body, try focusing your attention on how that part of your body feels. Remember that your mind extends throughout your body through your nervous system; this body scan exercise gives your mind a chance to get out your head and explore the rest of the vessel it inhabits.
- When you reach the top of your head, you can repeat the body scan, or simply sit in the presence of the moon.
- Repeat the exercise nightly for a couple weeks to deepen your connection not just with the moon, but also with your body and your focus—two of the most important tools for your practice.
Full Moon Tarot Spread

The full moon is a unique lunar phase in that it’s the only time in its cycle where we see the moon fully illuminated. With the moon representing our intuitive powers, this time of full illumination can be exceptionally useful for performing divination.
The Concept: Ask the moon for guidance by communicating through a deck of cards, and use their symbology to interpret the messages you receive.
Materials Needed:
- Tarot or oracle deck of choice
- Optional: Full Moon incense or candle to set the mood
The Process:
- Optional: Set up your divination space by settling into a comfortable seat and lighting a candle or incense stick (we recommend our Full Moon blend). You might call upon the moon directly to guide your reading.
- Shuffle your cards and spread them out before you.
- Review the spread below and pull your cards accordingly. Sit with each concept or question as you pull each card.
- Let your intuition be your guide as you analyze the response each card is offering. If you keep a journal for your card readings, write down any insights that are revealed.
- Thank the cards and the moon offering for their guidance and close your reading out however you see fit.
Basic 3 Card Spread for the Full Moon

- CULMINATION: What goals or intentions are coming to fruition?
- AWARENESS: What hard or hidden truths is the moon illuminating?
- MOONLIGHT: What is the guidance or gift this full moon brings?
Make a Dream Sachet

Dried herbs and crystals are common tools of the witch’s trade (especially for green witches). Each variety is believed to bear a host of different properties that can be drawn upon for a variety of magical purposes, including workings done through dreams.
The Concept: Fill a small pouch with herbs, crystals, and magical intent to encourage good sleep and insightful visions through dreams.
Materials Needed:
- A small sachet (e.g. reusable muslin tea bag), preferably with a drawstring
- Optional: Pen and paper
- Basic herbal blend (the trio of herbs I strongly recommend including):
- Lavender for relaxation & deep sleep
- Mugwort for psychic powers & dreams
- Witch hazel for protection & divination
- Additional herbs of choice tailored to your intentions, such as:
- Cinnamon or clove for extra power & protection
- Cedar or fir for extra comfort, grounding, & intuition
- St. John’s wort or chamomile for extra upliftment & healing
- Rosemary or mint for mental clarity & protection
- Crystals of choice, such as:
- Amethyst for intuition, peace, & protection
- Moonstone for emotional balance & dreams
- Labradorite for transformation & awareness
- Blue apatite for psychic powers, communication, & wisdom
- Howlite for grounding, calm, & spiritual connection
- Clear quartz for clarity of mind & amplification of the spell
- Optional: String to tie sachet closed (especially if the bag you choose has no drawstring)
- Blue string for truth, knowledge, harmony, & healing
- Purple string for divination, wisdom, & psychic power
- Silver string for protection, psychic power, & lunar energy
- Optional: Full Moon incense or candle to set the mood
The Process:
- Optional: Light your Full Moon candle or incense stick to invite the energy of the full moon into your space.
- Make it your own: With a pen and a small slip of paper, write down an intention or dream-wish to inform the nature of your magical working. This can be as simple as a short sentence (e.g. I draw in deep sleep and prophetic dreams) or a few words (e.g. emotional growth, understanding, harmony, & healing); it can even take the form of a sigil. You might also consider writing a paragraph or two in a journal as you begin the ritual. Not only will this help to clarify your intentions to yourself—it will also make it easier to hold your focus on these intentions as you go through the steps to craft the bundle.
- Place each ingredient into your pouch. Focus on the specific properties you’re drawing on from each herb and/or crystal as you do so to charge them with your intention.
- If you wrote down an intention, dream-wish, or sigil on a small piece of paper, roll it up and place this in the pouch as well.
- Tie your bag closed to seal the working.
- Hold the pouch in your hands and speak your intention aloud to charge the pouch with its mission. If you lit a Full Moon candle or incense stick, pass the sachet over the flame or through the smoke to imbue it with lunar energy.
- Optional: Just like making moon water, place your pouch outside or on a windowsill where it can see the moon for a few hours or overnight to charge it with the energy of the moon.
- Tuck your dream sachet into or beneath your pillow. Record your dreams upon awakening in a journal, voice memo, or notes app entry to track the visions you receive!
